A Californians Volunteer Guide to Style While in Jamaica

One Dress, Two Ways. Church in Jamaica & Nightout by fattieja featuring dannijo   There seems to be a lot of traffic on here lately so I thought I would do a quick one dress, two ways post.   Church is a big activity in Jamaica and also with my host family, so I am figuring out how many different ways I can dress up and down one dress to be suitable for many different activities. Since my suitcase has limited space for a four month trip, I need to plan out my outfits strategically!   The Dress: All I really know about Church attire is that you shouldn’t be vulgar (no boobs hanging out, not to short). I really don’t know if cheetah print is going a little crazy? But even if it is… it is still cute. The skater style (fitted at the top, loose at the bottom) is perfect for a curvy body type! I have finally found the right shape! Yes. Though at times it can be a little shorter then I would want it to be, just because my butt is so dang big! Oh well. If cheetah is a little out there for you, find the same style and fit dress with a different pattern and colors that would work day and night; not like pastels. Church: I would probably wear a cardigan but choose one that is sheer and not like little-girl-cardiganish. I found this black one on Polyvore that is perfect, besides the color. Black is cute and would work for night, but I associate wearing black to Church with funerals. Not really the vibe I want to give off. I would look for a cream one and then wear a brown leather, skinny type of belt at the waist so you don’t drown in it. The disadvantage of light colored clothes is that you most likely will pack a lot of dark colors. When you go to wash your load and only have two white items, you’re screwed. I end of tossing them in with my dark jeans and get a huge (and sad!) mess. So maybe black after all? Or at least a happy color that will wash well with darks. Wear a clinique chubbystick in a pink and natural eye makeup. A chubbystick is soft and natural looking without being to much color and it feels amazing! Then, and this is my new obsession, a sweet and patterned headwrap from etsy! When the water from the tank runs out and you aren’t able to wash your hair, just do a fishtail braid to the side and throw this thing on. Easssssy peasy. Though the fishtail is anything but easy… I am just not coordinated! The shoes and earrings you can wear both nights, which is why it is in the middle. Night: Then for night, a cropped studded jean vest, a gold choker, bronze makeup and a dark red lipstick. I bought a jean vest from Forever21 that was pretty cheap and has a cool lace back. The necklace I got on sale for $5.00 at Urban Outfitters. I am such a good bargain shopper! Guess you have to be when you don’t have a choice… but that is beside the point! So, I have a question for my followers. Do you think cheetah is to out there for Church?

It is finally Spring! Summer is now officially around the corner, which makes writing a blog geared toward the perfect (though not always thanks to the odd rain showers) tropical Jamaican weather a lot easier. While it does keep your imagination alive to dream about wearing shorts and breezy tops in the dead of winter, it really is a whole lot enjoyable to look outside your window and see flowers blooming then it was to see ice sickles covering bare branches. Jamaica’s normal temperatures are in the 80s. Though this is determined by your proximity to the coast. The further inland and the higher the elevation, it is tipically cooler. The coast can reach well into the 90s in the day and 80s at night. And inland the days will be hot and nights cooler, though hardly ever cold. So, taking into account the drastic change in weather here in one of the California mountains and also to the shift of images and trends in magazines, I am doing a post about spring colors! The Spring colors are pastels, normally for bottoms. This means skinny jeans, legging jeans, shorts and cropped jeans in pastels like coral, light lime, mint, yellow, and some blues. Tops are also pastels or of a brighter color and have been paired mostly with colors opposite on the color wheel. For example, coral and blue. Mix and match colors you wouldnt normally put together! No crazy neon’s and reds. Blah. That doesn’t read easy breezy and summery does it? First and foremost this blog consists primarily of tips on style, culture, and travel information while volunteering in Jamaica but second, it is for curvy women. So with that in mind curvy women normally stay away from bright colors that could bring attention to parts of their bodies they would like to conceal. As a rule of thumb most wear dark colors on the bottom to appear thinner. I personally covet the coca cola body shape (small on top, big hips) so I don’t mind that my hips may appear bigger (I know, you may think that is crazy.) And for those of you who may be like me, colors on the bottoms is a good choice. Those who prefer to wear dark colors on the bottom should branch out with festive colors on the top, coral being my favorite! Colors will bring attention to your body, so pastels on the bottom may be a weary choice for curvy girls who want to minimize their trouble areas. For those who love the coca cola body shape, colors on the bottom are great!
