A Californians Volunteer Guide to Style While in Jamaica

The Skinny on Leggings.

Alright, here is why you need to pack leggings. Depending on where you work you may be aloud to wear leggings. I volunteered at a Children’s home, and leggings were not allowed. In fact, nothing above your knee was considered appropriate. Keep in mind, while there are a select number of Dancehall types of Jamaicans, there are still a large group of conservatives as well. Jamaica has the most churches per square mile in the world. So yes, you will see a large number of women dressed in skin tight clothing, sheer tops and brightly colored (and visible) undergarments. But at the same token you will see a larger population of women dressed in their Sundays best. So keep this in mind when packing as well.

  • Keep in mind your volunteer/work placements. And don’t forget the culture can be at either end of the spectrum, conservative and free spirited.

Second, and yes this may bother some, leggings have a protective use to them too. Going to bars, and liming with other volunteers or locals is a very common practice. In fact, if you are limited in money and cannot travel every weekend to the other parts of the island like me, drinking had become one of my only relaxing and unwinding activities.

I am human, and happen to drink a little to much… much to often. And when alone without familiar people it is possible to get yourself in some sticky situations. Wearing leggings are helpful because men will have a harder time accessing the goods, and give you time to come to your senses and get the hell out of there. Obviously you know wearing a dress alone isn’t going to do much, so leggings are a good option.

Now, I am not saying get drunk full well knowing that there is a possible situation to get taken advantage of and use this as a way to justify it, if it does end up becoming a reality. But being careful and prepared is nothing to be ashamed of. And really, you dont have to be drunk to get caught off guard, this is a reality for anyone regardless of color or place of residence. But take note that being a foreigner puts you at a much greater risk.

  • Protective tool.

I love the cropped leggings and it should be a no brain-er why. Cause its hot… and you sweat. Being hot and wearing jeans is a huge pet peeve. I am not a fan of wearing clothes at all really, but when I do I make the necessary adjustments to meet my needs. And being hot, is definitely one of them. I am planning on buying three cropped ruched leggings in black, grey, and taupe. And then two long ruched ankle leggings in black and possibly purple. Right now you can buy any two of leggings or tunics for $40, which is a pretty good deal considering they are normally over $20 each.

  • Buy five leggings total. Three cropped, and two long. The cropped are great for work, or casual dressing in the day time when you are feeling to fat for shorts or just dont want something so heavy while walking the 30 minutes up to your office for a meeting. The long are great for night time, as it can get cool but definitely not cold. The ruched ankle would be great will some dressier sandals or covered with knee length high boots.

Tunics, oh comfort.

So your not feeling so cute today, and you just want something you can slip on without much fuss. Knowing that a tunic is way to short not to wear anything under it you reach for a pair of leggings that cover your not-so-flat stomach. Perfect.

These tunics are cute, and most of all they have three very different styles that ALL cover my arms. Not my favorite body part I must say. The tops are comfortable, casual and have a touch of sex appeal. Each type has a good selection of colors, and all flatter a curvy body type. They are cut smaller at the waist and slightly bigger at the hips hugging all the right places. The ruched hips to the right is perfect for night if your feeling in a more casual mood, and the other two options can work for either night or day. I will most likely purchase two of each, ranging from a sea foam green, to black. I plan to get a grey/black leopard print in the ruched hip which would be great for a night out for drinks. Just throw on black leggings, leather knee high boots, and some earrings and your good to go.

  • Buy two of each style that you believe will flatter your figure. No need to go over six though, although they are light weight and shouldn’t take up to much space in your luggage, there are many different ways to wear them and different occasions too as well… when you pack the right accessories.
